Colossal says it hopes to use advanced genetic sequencing to resurrect two extinct mammals — not just the giant, ice age mammoth, but also a mid-sized marsupial known as the thylacine, or Tasmanian tiger, that died out less than a century ago. On its website, the company vows: “Combining the science of genetics with the business of discovery, we endeavor to jumpstart nature’s ancestral heartbeat.”
In-Q-Tel, its new investor, is registered as a nonprofit venture capital firm funded by the CIA. On its surface, the group funds technology startups with the potential to safeguard national security. In addition to its long-standing pursuit of intelligence and weapons technologies, the CIA outfit has lately displayed an increased interest in biotechnology and particularly DNA sequencing.
“Why the interest in a company like Colossal, which was founded with a mission to “de-extinct” the wooly mammoth and other species?” reads an In-Q-Tel blog post published on September 22. “Strategically, it’s less about the mammoths and more about the capability.”
“Biotechnology and the broader bioeconomy are critical for humanity to further develop. It is important for all facets of our government to develop them and have an understanding of what is possible,” Colossal co-founder Ben Lamm wrote in an email to The Intercept. (A spokesperson for Lamm stressed that while Thiel provided Church with $100,000 in funding to launch the woolly mammoth project that became Colossal, he is not a stakeholder like Robbins, Hilton, Winklevoss Capital, and In-Q-Tel.)
Colossal uses CRISPR gene editing, a method of genetic engineering based on a naturally occurring type of DNA sequence. […] The eponymous gene editing technique was developed to function the same way, allowing users to snip unwanted genes and program a more ideal version of the genetic code.
The embrace of this technology, according to In-Q-Tel’s blog post, will help allow U.S. government agencies to read, write, and edit genetic material, and, importantly, to steer global biological phenomena that impact “nation-to-nation competition” while enabling the United States “to help set the ethical, as well as the technological, standards” for its use.
Okay, am I the only one that finds the idea of US government agencies having the authority to use this technology completely terrifying?
I remember when CRISPR technology was first developed bioethicists were like yeah, you shouldn’t do that, and everyone else was like shut up and think of the children! We can eradicate birth defects with this!! And have they eradicated birth defects with this? Don’t be silly, of course not! No, we’re going to build supersoldiers or morally-vacant human robots or something, that’s way more important!

So if you love Jane Austen and think it would be fun to have veins throbbing in your temples, here’s something for you to read:
The film’s first trailer wasn’t roundly greeted with excitement, as many watchers (presumably hardcore Austen fans who have never once enjoyed the pleasures of something perfect like “Clueless”) took it to task for being too modern, too silly, too “Bridget Jones does Regency cosplay.” How very lucky we are then that one trailer, just mere minutes of a film, is not an entire feature.
I mean, the author refers to P&P 1995’s Fitzwilliam Darcy as Mark Darcy so it’s not as though she actually knows what she’s talking about, but I really just love it when reviewers insult people who love whatever book is being adapted. Especially when your review is a litany of all the ways the character is grossly changed from the original, but she’s really heartbroken and sad, yo, so that means it’s a good adaptation.

Sample A: “There could have never been two hearts so open, no tastes so similar, no feelings so in unison, no countenances so beloved. Now they were as strangers; nay, worse than strangers, for they could never become acquainted. It was a perpetual estrangement.
Sample B: “A heartbeat ago, there were no two people more in rhythm than Wentworth and I. Now we’re strangers. Worse than strangers — we’re exes.”
Sample A: “My being the mother is the very reason why my feelings should not be tried. I am not at all equal to it. You saw how hysterical I was yesterday.”
Sample B: “The thing about me is, I am an empath.”
To clarify the obvious — something the movie under review today has no problem doing — the “A” excerpts are from Jane Austen’s magnificent novel “Persuasion.” The “B” excerpts are from the movie, which I suppose you could also call “Persuasion,” insofar as it appears to have lifted sentences from the novel and fed them through some kind of Instagram-filtering, catchphrase-generating, text-summarizing idiot bot.
Finally, a review written by someone who actually knows his Austen.

My #1 post of 2022
Sewing patterns provide a uniquely detailed look at the lives of working-class people throughout history that clothing collections held at museums or universities seldom offer. These patterns — flimsy packets of paper covered in shapes, numbers, and symbols — guide sewists through the process of making everything from sweatpants to wedding dresses. And through most of the 20th century, before manufacturers moved production to capitalize on cheap labor abroad, sewing at home was a way to have high-quality clothing for less money.
But scholarship around patterns and home sewing is still relatively underappreciated, often dismissed as women’s work or insignificant to fashion and art. The common pattern’s ubiquitousness only adds to its disposability — patterns were cheap to purchase and finicky to preserve and were never meant to last.
For the community of vintage sewing enthusiasts, an unassuming website maintained by the University of Rhode Island is a priceless and irreplaceable treasure. The Commercial Pattern Archive is one of the few projects in the world that safeguards these documents that are fragile, easily forgotten, and born to die. A labor of love and insistence on the part of a small team of historians, costume designers, archivists, and hobbyists, the archive began in the 1990s and includes a physical stash and digital database of English-language patterns unparalleled in its scope and depth. CoPA is home to around 56,000 physical patterns going back to the 1800s, along with books, pamphlets, journals, and other related material.

Notably this list doesn't include The Way It Ends or Requiem even though they were both included in the show. I'm inclined to believe this is a mistake as there are some other mistakes throughout the program (and even on this page, the final The Way Things Are isn't listed as a reprise).

In keeping with the original Japanese format, the programme of Death Note: The Musical in Concert has been designed to be read from right to left. Sometimes, English editors of Japanese manga do what's known as "flopping", that is, producing an exact mirror image of all the manga panels on a page, so it can be read from left to right. This may avoid British brain-ache, but many manga creators in Japan feel that this alters their original artistic intentions. To honour them, we are proud to present our programme in an unflopped format. So, turn to the other side of the programme, and let the adventure begin! EDITOR." At the very bottom in small text it says copyright Tsugumi Ohba, Takeshi Obata Shueisha, Horipro. There are five autographs in golden sharpie. End ID]
They started selling autographed programmes on Saturday at the Lyric for not much more than the non-signed ones. I can't read the handwriting very well but I'm pretty sure they're signed by Light/Joaquin Pedro Valdes, Rem/Aimee Atkinson), Ryuk/George Maguire, and Misa/Jessica Lee). This particular programme is also signed by Sayu/Rachel Clare Chan, as I met her at stage door and she happened to have a pen. :) I really wish I'd thought to bring one so I could have gotten L/Dean John Wilson's autograph as well (I'm not sure why he didn't sign the programmes - maybe because Carl Mann also performed the role?) but you can't win them all I guess.
More described images of the programme and commentary below the cut. I am only including the "articles" so to speak and excluding the actor bios/ad pages because I don't have it in me to type up every bit of information in here. If you would like to see the extra pages and are willing to write image descriptions, DM me.

Two things to note here: the use of the manga font and the welcome message that specifies the Palladium. The rest of the programme mentions both the Lyric and the Palladium, so I'm not sure if the absence of the Lyric here is a mistake or if they wanted to preserve the original intent of the message, which is that the first performances at the Palladium were a really big deal.

"The project to adapt the internationally acclaimed manga Death Note, published by Shueisha and created by Tsugumi Ohba (original story) and Takeshi Obata (illustrations), into a musical, began in 2011. Composed by Frank Wildhorn, who has collaborated with our company on numerous productions since Jekyll & Hyde in Tokyo in 2001, and directed by the renowned Japanese director Tamiya Kuriyama, Death Note: The Musical had its world premiere in Tokyo in 2015. Since then, it has garnered passionate, enthusiastic fans and has been performed multiple times in Japan and South Korea.
"Currently, HoriPro is presenting Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and School of Rock in Tokyo. Over the years we have had the pleasure of bringing numerous wonderful works born in London, such as Mary Poppins, Matilda and Billy Elliot, to Japan. It brings us immeasurable joy to now introduce a production originating from Japan to audiences in London.
"To everyone witnessing the start of Death Note: The musical as it ventures into the world, we express our heartfelt gratitude.

[ID: the panel from the manga of Light's heart attack. Text box that says, "Death Note Between Entertainment and Culture by Filippo Cervelli
"When Death Note originally appeared as a manga in 2003, it took its audience by surprise. The story of the genius high-school student Light Yagami chancing upon the magic titular Death Note, giving him the power to kill everyone on the planet just by writing their name on its pages, was a compelling tale interweaving magic with the urban Tokyo everyday environment. Dissatisfied with the judicial system, Light takes the matters of justice into his own hands, placing himself above the law and embarking on a journey to purge the world of evildoers. From this enticing premise Death Note then evolves into a psychological thriller, epitomised by Light's cat-and-mouse battle with his main antagonist, the brilliant and mysterious detective L. The numerous panels alternating the two characters playing mind games against each other, brilliantly written by Tsugumi Ohba and vividly drawn by artist Takeshi Obata, have left a long-lasting impression on the manga's readers. And yet, together with the compelling drama and carefully crafted dialogues, Death Note also struck a powerful chord in its audience, because no reader could remain insensitive to the simple yet fundamental question it asked: "What would you do if you had the power to change the world?" end ID]
Tumblr media
[ID: the manga panel where Soichiro has just fired an empty gun at Light in the car and Misa and Light both look terrified but relieved. There are two pull-out quotes that say "Death Note has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide, making it one of the bestselling manga of all time" and "Death Note has successfully shown that manga aimed at 'kids' can treat very serious matters, too." The rest of the article reads: "Not only was Death Note a successful story, the context of its publication was conducive to its great impact. Japan's comics industry is heavily focused on serialisations in dedicated magazines, of which there exist a plethora, divided by frequency of publication (weekly, biweekly, monthly, etc.) and genre. Death Note was in fact published in weekly instalments in Shonen Jump, Japan's most popular and iconic manga magazine which, in its 55 years of history, has published global hits such as Jojo's Bizarre Adventures (1987-2004), Dragonball (1984-1995) and the more recent Demon Slayer (2016-2020) and One Piece (1997-). While the popularity of Shonen Jump contributed to the visibility of Death Note, it also placed the story in an unusual context. As the above examples show, Shonen Jump is famous for action, comedy and sports manga catered to an audience of mainly adolescent boys. Although the categorisation does not of course preclude readers outside of this demographic, Japanese magazines do take their target audiences into serious consideration when choosing their contents. It was therefore striking that a manga not based on humour, romance or battles, which focused instead on murder and psychological thrills, could find a space among the pages of Jump. However, this supposed misplacement worked in the manga's favour, inducing in readers a sense of wonder and curiosity towards a new publication that seemed so different from its neighbours. In the end, with a serialised run of three years (2003-2006), later collected in twelve volumes (plus one with extra contents), Death Note has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide, making it one of the bestselling manga of all time. It has successfully shown that manga aimed at 'kids' can treat very serious matters, too.
"Beyond the numbers, Death Note has left an indelible mark on contemporary Japanese culture. Its great success solidified the reputation of Oba and Obata as one of manga's most appreciated duos, who later produced other hits such as Bakuman (2008-2012), which takes an insider's look into the world of manga publiishing in Japan, and Platinum End (2015-2021), a fantasy manga following the stories a group of contenders who are granted angelic powers in a race to become the next God. Death Note proposes a protagonist who chooses to fight for his values in a society that does not seem to give any solid models of prosperity and fails to ensure individual happiness. While Light's motives might be despicable, his actions ask fundamental questions about right and wrong and about what justice really means, which may not find immediate answers. This is possibly Death Note's deepest strength.
"All these factors have assured Death Note's success. While the original manga is read avidly around the world even today, 20 years after its original serialisation began, the story has also been expanded and adapted into various media. Together with the animated series following the original story, a live-action film version was released shortly after the manga's conclusion in 2006. Split into two parts, the films starred internationally renowned Tatsuya (Battle Royale) and Ken'ichi Matsuyama (Norwegian Wood, Gantz) as Light and L, respectively. The films, featuring a different ending from the manga version, enjoyed such popularity that they spawned a spin-off film in 2008, L Change the WorLd, focusing on the titular awkward and brilliant detective. In 2016, another spin-off film was released. Titled Death Note: Light Up the New World and set ten years after the confrontation between Light and L, it imagines a new case in which six new death notes have appeared. Filmic adaptations have also crossed Japanese borders, with a US-produced film released by Netflix in 2017. The film transposes the story to an American high school setting, changing characters' names accordingly. The TV format has also proved particularly fruitful for Death Note, with the story adapted into a series of 11 episodes in 2015, featuring in the role of L Kento Yamazaki, known to Western audiences as the lead in the Netflix show Alice in Borderland.
"With countless adaptations to other media, including novels, videogames and trading card games, Death Note's cultural impact is still strong. Together with reading the original manga and watching the various cinematic versions, London audiences now have the possibility to enjoy the musical adaptation of the manga series, adding another precious layer to the multimedia experience of this staple of contemporary Japanese creativity.
"Filippo Cervelli is a Lecturer in Modern and Contemporary Japanese Literature at SOAS University of London." End ID]

A Greek tragedy in modern Britain: what could go wrong… or right?
student number: 202138549
On September 4th, 2014, an audience of approximately one and a half thousand sat with bated breath, awaiting the arrival of Euripides’s infamous Medea. Anticipation grew as the twenty-first century theatron prepared for Ben Power’s modern adaptation of this piece of classical antiquity. However, was the catastrophe that previously unfolded under Athens’s Acropolis, before seventeen-thousand eyes, captured in the condensed setting of London’s National Theatre? For the approximate one and a half thousand present that evening perhaps yes, but in a slightly unconventional way.  A full screening of Carrie Cracknell’s production can be found here.
Tumblr media
(Pocket Sized Theatre, 2014)
The image above shows Medea, played by late actress Helen McCrory, taking a photograph of her (ex) husband Jason, played by Danny Sapani who is stood between their two children, played by Joel McDermott to the left and Jude Pearce to the right. Jason’s attendant and the nurse are also present in the backdrop, played by played by Toby Wharton and Michaela Coel respectively. From this image alone, the level of disbelief we are to suspend as an audience is called into contest. Are we to assume that the smartphone dates to Before the Common Era? Despite the slight comical relief this may provide, a literal interpretation may somewhat miss the point. Instead, elements of this modern dress production could be argued to evoke a more intimate response from a modern audience. In his mythopoesis of tragedy, Euripides teased the fourth wall by bounding Medea for Athens at the end of the play, where her sun-curated chariot had the potential to cross paths with the theatre of Dionysus itself. In this sense, director Carrie Cracknell may have bound us, the audience, to the wrath of Medea and the horror that unfolds around her in the play’s contemporary spin.
The story of a quasi-divine barbarian, abandoning her family, as well as killing her brother, to be with her husband certainly facilitates the non-naturalistic procession of Ancient Greek dramaturgy. Yet, when Medea then kills her own children in an emotionally yet calculated attempt to seek revenge against her adulterating husband, Cracknell’s revised stage directions offer a radical insight into what truly fuels a tragic act.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Smith, 2014)
For instance, Helen McCrory smoking a cigarette whilst clad in khaki, androgynous clothing portrays a woman unhinged that typical Greek attire may not convey. A dilapidated house coupled with a balcony above comprises a modern set which arguably usurps Ancient Greece in its depiction of chaos and disorder. More specifically, an all-male Grecian cast may struggle to encapsulate the true essence of female corruption Euripides conveyed in his writing, beyond the Aristotelian limitations of space a proskenion would allow. In her interview with the National Theatre (2014), Helen claimed that the symbolism of Medea’s appearance was imperative, where the switch from suit pants and vests to a billowing white piece parallels the characters switch in mindset. Medea’s grief and attachment towards Jason compels her to act in a way so potent only the feminine can accomplish. Similarly, Michael Billington highlighted in his review of the National Theatre production (2014) how the writer and director succeed in capturing Medea as both a ‘rational and irrational’ character who is simultaneously ‘in the grip of a vengeful idée fixe and yet open to maternal feeling.’
What is particularly interesting about this production is its presentation of Medea’s internal and external conflict: more specifically relating to justice and teleology. During a scene at the end of the play, both parents are on stage, with Danny’s character, Jason, on his knees with grief confronting a distraught Medea who clutches her dead children in sleeping bags beside her. At first, the interaction that follows appears to be a torment fuelled argument between loathsome spouses, but a closer inspection can illuminate the dramatic and psychological complexity of such a horrific situation where ‘Medea’s rageful act goes deep to a dark core of the psyche that we all possess.’ (2021:211). In their article Medea (2021), Corey Hooper takes a twentieth century psychological approach to the moral and cultural understandings of infanticide. They argue that Medea herself is also in some sense a victim. Her barbarian heritage and history of exile compels her to invest more into her husband than the average Corinthian woman. This approach to Helen McCrory’s Medea then allows a more holistic approach to Medea’s actions, where the slaughter of her children is perhaps a consequentialist attack engineered to seek the upmost revenge against her husband’s infidelity. Medea screeching to Jason ‘to make you finally feel something of my pain soothes me’ precedes a dialogue of emotive stichomythia which resonates with us as an audience, where what Helen McCrory described as ‘walking the knife edge’ presents a struggle between desire and action that lies within us all. Shakespeare’s famous opener ‘to be or not to be’ (Hamlet, 3.1.55) can be understood in this piece of dramaturgy as Medea’s internal struggle to act or not to act (quite literally in Helen’s case): risking remaining passive within the whirlpool of her characters’ misfortunes.
Tumblr media
(Rafik, 2008)
The image above shows Medea escaping Corinth on her snake-drawn chariot with her deceased children in the back, given to her by her grandfather Helios the god of sun. Within Ancient Greek theatre, this ‘deus ex machina’ moment is arguably crucial to the Euripidean play in illustrating the true tragedy of a situation. ‘As the deus ex machina of her own plot, Medea undercuts the possibility of divine retribution’ which Hopman further describes to create the ‘perfect revenge tragedy’ (2008:179). Alongside a divine intervention, Hopman’s article on on Revenge and Mythopoiesis in Euripides’ Medea  (2008),  highlights the importance of the chorus as a feminine collective force which can illustrate Medea’s position not only in relation to Jason, but the other women of Corinth. Looking at the National Theatre’s production, there then could be identified some slight areas of lacking. Helen McCrory’s exit scene shows her stumbling into a white light which shines from the depths of the forest, backing onto Medea’s house. Despite the intense music playing and smoke rising, this ending is arguably somewhat underwhelming for an audience, where Medea’s divine nature is disregarded and replaced with a stumbling, hyperventilating woman uttering lone words such as ‘come’ and ‘now’. The dramatic potential of this performance is also questioned with bouts of expressive dance from the women of Corinth. In his article Sharing Emotions Through Theatre: The Greek Way (2016), Woodruff argues that the chorus act as mediators whose crucial role is to bridge the gap between what the actor and the audience are feeling. Unless Cracknell’s aim was for the audience to feel literally ‘moved’, it is difficult to ascertain what emotions are meant to be gained from two minutes of uninterrupted, sporadic dance preceding Medea murdering her children off-stage. However, it be may important to consider the modern purpose of Cracknell’s ‘chorus’ where both the editorial and directorial aim was less focused on traditional Greek understandings of a collective conscience.
Subsequently, Cracknell’s modern production of tragedy can be seen to interact variably with Euripides’s Medea. Certain stylistic choices leave room for interpretation within the audience. However there does remain certain elements of Greek dramaturgy which, when fused with a twenty first century reality, illuminate the undiluted tragedy a woman is able to create when pushed to do so.

NHL Expansion Draft 2021: Full list of players available for Seattle Kraken
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The NHL announced the protected lists for the 30 teams involved in the NHL Expansion Draft. (Vegas is exempt.) With the names of those protected come the guys who could be snatched up by the Seattle Kraken. There are a number of big names that have everyone trying to figure out just what general manager Ron Francis will do. Will he take Canadiens netminder, and future Hall of Famer, Carey Price and his hefty cap hit? Is Vladimir Tarasenko the sniper he needs or is his health a big question mark? There's also a number of guys who would fit in nicely but are free agents and the chances of signing them are not high (i.e. Alex Ovechkin).  EXPANSION DRAFT: Date, time, rules & more for Seattle Kraken team selectionRegardless of what Francis, coach Dave Hakstrol and Co. end up doing, there's a good chance the Kraken will be a playoff contender in just their first season. For now, let the intrigue and the guessing WWRFD (that's: what will Ron Francis do?) begin. Here's a look at every player they can pick.

Every time I hear this I think about the DOWs run to the championship at Andy's trivia league, our failure to identify this as well as his subsequent mocking of that.  Good times, I miss those days.  Have a great birthday and hopefully we can see each other in person again and get the band back together for a round of trivia.
